I’m taking a break from my Eggs Benny list and sniffing up some good ol’ Amsterdam munchies. The city has been getting a lot of its much missed sunshine these days so after a day of lounging on the grass and enjoying some of De Bakkerswinkel’s scones, we had to have dinner one way or another and we chose to have it within a few leaps from where we were. Lo and behold, a gem – the most perfect meal I’ve had down to the mint tea at the end is none other than Brouwerij Troost.
It’s my first time here but I’ve had a few tastings of their much loved beers. Looking at the menu and the other tables surrounding us, it was easy to know what to get: a burger and a beer. I spotted sweet potato fries, one thing I miss a lot and don’t see much of on menus in Amsterdam and I had to get them. The burgers looked tall and seemed too juicy to ignore so we got The Italian along with some baked caulis.
Being a brewery, I didn’t really have expectations – not even low and not even high at all. There was nothing. It was more of filling us up for the evening. But boy, we were surprised! I immediately stretched out my hand to grab a few sweet potato chips – perfectly done. Not at all soggy, cut perfectly – wow. First surprise down and the next one was the burger. It had a solid base of lettuce, mayo, caramelised onions, black olives, gorgonzola with an incredibly thick and packed patty sealed off with pancetta- this was phenomenal. Every bite was sweetness, crunch and flavour in one. What brought it all together was the bread they chose, toasted and in decent ratio to the burger. What joy. It’s already making me dream about this place again. I loved every bite of that burger! Next to The Butcher’s patty, this is probably the best I’ve had in the city. Yet.
The prices weren’t too bad at all. The burger was 12.50EUR for a big portion and the chips cost 4EUR for a big cup and the caulis were the same, I think. They are more small dishes than sides so sharing is key. I can’t think of anything to improve or change at all. What an incredible experience!
We definitely give this place a 10/10.
What a sunny Sunday it was! Cheers to more of this, Amsterdam.
